The Interview :: And.ID

In the space of a few years Grecian And. ID (known to family as Andreas Dimitriadis) has stormed into Europe’s music scene with his blend of melodic techno and organic percussive grooves.  Often accompanied by his trumpet, the result of growing up around Jazz, And.ID seamlessly moves from laying down beats in the studio to mixing up live at some of the best clubs and festivals around the world propelling him to the honor of Mobilee Records latest star.

And.Id is mobilee’s master of swung beats and live brass, characterising his textured and rhythmic productions as “body moving, and mind grooving.”

On Friday July  13th he plays the iLL Communications season closing party with none other than Martin Landsky. Billed as a Mobilee Label Night and following on from last years epic (and we don’t use the word lightly) closer with Art Department this is expected to go further than we have ever gone before!

Here’s some words with the man…

You’re quite well known for embellishing your sets with live trumpet – are you bringing the brass to the UAE?

Thanks, unfortunately I m not bringing my trumpet with me this time as I ‘m not performing a live set in Dubai, but I will bring with me some favorite records that I will play and we are going to have a good time!

Your music encompasses several genres so what can we expect to hear in Dubai?

I can be flexible depending on the crowd and the venue. A lot of surprise records are hidden in my record bag. I ‘m not stuck with genres. As long as I can dance to a record, then it is good enough for me to play it!

The night is a Mobilee label showcase, also featuring Martin Landsky. Have you two crossed paths many times in the past?

Mobilee nights are something not to be missed!
We are friends with Martin and we have played a lot of times together… For sure is something special. But I m not saying much because I don’t want to spoil the surprise!

Was Berlin, where Mobilee is based, something of a clubbing Holy Grail when you were growing up? When did you first visit? Is it still a clubbing capital in your opinion?

I cannot say that it was my personal clubbing Holy Grail .For sure it is the clubbing capital but there are much more things that make Berlin a great city to live. There is much space for expression and a lot of artists are gathering here around the globe. My first visit in Berlin was back in 2004. From the first day I felt good and fascinated with the city!

Can you pick out a favorite city/club/event that you’ve played this year so far?

Difficult to answer because every place is unique and has a different energy but if I have to pick up one that will be our Mobilee Rooftop party in Barcelona during Sonar!

You previously assembled a jazz-based band to reinterpret Mobilee classics – is the live band route something you’re going to explore further in the future?

Yes, I m always working with my BAND in the background.  Things are going to happen when the time is right.
The future plans are to make a long player and set up a live performance with a lot of musicians on stage.

You probably get asked about this everywhere you go, but what is Greece like at the moment, with all the austerity cuts and political turmoil etc?

As the most of you probably know by now we have a new government that it is not so new as it is a combination of parties that have governing for the past 30 years and led Greece in that condition. People are losing their jobs but not their hope for a better future. Politicians are corrupt and in my opinion that’s the reason why Greece was the perfect place for the countries with power to test the limits of the economic system.
The only good thing about this story is that people redefine themselves and going back to the roots! A lot of people moving from the big cities to the country side and choose a new way of life closer to nature. In the cities Art is emerging as a reaction of young people against the political system.
I do not know what to expect but I know at the end Greece will find its way!

What’s next?
I’ m looking forward to Dubai, as it will be my first time there!

Friday July 22nd :: iLL Communications Closing Party :: Mobilee Label Night; Martin Landsky & AND.ID. 10pm Trilogy Club Dubai.
